Family Structure
- Egg to adult: 2.5 to 3 months
- Multiple queens
Appearance
- Head and thorax: red and orange
- Abdomen: black and brown
Where Found
- Atlantic coast, extending from Nova Scotia to parts of Georgia
Habitat
- Very large, complex colonies
- Multiple mounds which may be interconnected
- Tunnels may drop 3 feet (0.91 m) underground and as much as 4 feet (1.2 m) above ground in the mound
- Mound serves as an incubator for the larvae and eggs
Diet
- Protein: wide assortment of arthropods
- Sugar: aphid honeydew
Characteristics
- Inject formic acid strong enough to kill small trees and shrubs into vegetation within 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 m) of their mounds
- Very aggressive
- Will bite if their mound is disturbed
