Allegheny Mound Ant

Family Structure

  • Egg to adult: 2.5 to 3 months
  • Multiple queens

Appearance

  • Head and thorax: red and orange
  • Abdomen: black and brown

Where Found

  • Atlantic coast, extending from Nova Scotia to parts of Georgia

Habitat

  • Very large, complex colonies
  • Multiple mounds which may be interconnected
  • Tunnels may drop 3 feet (0.91 m) underground and as much as 4 feet (1.2 m) above ground in the mound
  • Mound serves as an incubator for the larvae and eggs

Diet

  • Protein: wide assortment of arthropods
  • Sugar: aphid honeydew

Characteristics

  • Inject formic acid strong enough to kill small trees and shrubs into vegetation within 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 m) of their mounds
  • Very aggressive
  • Will bite if their mound is disturbed
