  • Part of the fourth largest order of living organisms
  • More known flies than vertebrates (120,000 different kinds of flies now known; estimates there may be a million species today)

Where Found

  • Flies are found in all non-marine ecosystems
  • Arctic and Antarctic are only places with no Flies

Characteristics

The economic importance of flies is immense

  • Transmit diseases
  • Mosquitoes and black flies carry more infections to humans than any other species!
  • Flies destroy our food, especially grains and fruits
  • Important as experimental animals (Drosophila) and biological control agents against weeds and other insects
